Israelite House of David - The Jam and Jelly Stand

When you walked from our free parking lot, one of the first buildings on the South side was the Jam and Jelly Stand.  Oscar and Agnes (Dalager) Wade used to run this stand at the North end of the park.  Later it was manned by Violet (McFarlane) Tucker and former member Reuben Jeffery.

Martin Martinson from Sweden was a frequent worker at the stand and was known to call out "Get Your Yams and Yellies Here!"

Oscar Wade ran the original Cold Storage and Preserves factory which was located at 1104 Broad Street in St. Joseph.  We purchased the old Compound & Pyrno Door Company building in the mid 1930's and converted it to a manufacturing facility for our Jams and Jellies.

They were originally sold under the name "Mrs. Grant's Pure Preserves."  This paid homage to the mother of the first plant manager, Tom Grant.  They were later sold under the name "House of David."  We shipped the House of David Jams and Jellies all over the world.

Oscar was the plant supervisor until his passing in 1955 and then Robert Dewhirst took over until it closed in the early 1960's.

This photo is from the early 1950's and shows colony member John Boone, and former member George Hannaford Sr directing the crowds to our parks attractions.
